John Rood (1902 - 1974)

John Rood was born February 22, 1902, in Athens, Ohio. He left school at the age of twelve to help support his family after his father passed away. While at home he taught himself painting, music, and writing. This prompted him to start a job in publishing and printing which was abandoned in 1933 due to a newfound passion and interest in sculpture.

In 1937, Rood had his first solo show in New York at the Argent Gallery. This marked the beginning of a prolific career with over one hundred solo exhibitions across the United States. He primarily started out in wood carving, with a folk style.

He wrote Wood Sculpture in 1940, Sculpture in Wood in 1950, and in 1963, after taking up stone carving, and then later moving into bronze and metal carving, Rood wrote Sculpture with a Torch.

John Rood spent the majority of his time in Minneapolis where he was a resident artist at the University of Minnesota (1944) and later became a professor (1957). After leaving the University in 1964, Rood went on to have shown in Europe, including in Milan and Rome, Italy. He spent a few years in Washington, DC, and then returned to Minneapolis where he died in 1974.
